How to Protect Your Phone from Hackers & Data Theft
How to Protect Your Phone from Hackers and Data Theft
Step-by-step security tips for Android and iPhone users
At Mobilesnap, our priority goes beyond simply repairing your phone: protecting it. Today, smartphones contain your banking information, personal photos, social media access, and much more. Unfortunately, that also makes them attractive targets for hackers.

This guide explains how to secure your phone, with detailed steps for Android and iOS users.
1. Use strong, unique lock-screen passwords

A weak password is like leaving your door unlocked. Your phone should use a complex PIN, password, or biometric lock.
iPhone:
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode)
Choose Turn Passcode On or Change Passcode
Select Passcode Options and choose a custom alphanumeric code for stronger security
Android:
Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Screen lock
Choose between PIN, pattern, or password (a password offers the strongest option)
Enable fingerprint unlock or facial recognition in the biometric settings if supported
2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

2FA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code or prompt in addition to your password.
For Apple ID:
Go to Settings > [your name] > Password & Security
Enable two-factor authentication
For a Google account (Android or iOS):
Go to your Google Account security settings
Under Signing in to Google, enable 2-Step Verification
Choose options such as a text-message code, Google prompt, or an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator
Use an app such as Authy or Google Authenticator for additional control and security.
3. Avoid public Wi-Fi or use a VPN

Hackers sometimes create fake access points or monitor public networks.
VPN setup (Android and iOS):
Download a trusted VPN app such as NordVPN, ProtonVPN, or ExpressVPN
Follow the app's setup instructions and connect before using public Wi-Fi
4. Keep your phone and apps up to date

Security patches are included in software updates.
iPhone:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update
Enable Automatic Updates for added peace of mind
Android:
Go to Settings > System > System update
Tap Check for updates
Also check Play Store > Manage apps & device > Updates available
5. Uninstall suspicious or unused apps

Some apps create more risk than value.
iPhone:
Press and hold the app, then tap Remove App and Delete App
Or go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and review large or unused apps
Android:
Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps
Tap any suspicious or unused app and choose Uninstall
6. Review app permissions
Over-permissioned apps can create privacy risks.
iPhone:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security
Review each category (Camera, Microphone, Location, and so on) and disable access for apps that do not need it
Android:
Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager
Tap each permission type, such as Camera or Location, and remove access where it is not needed
7. Be careful with suspicious links

Phishing links can steal passwords and install malware. Always:
Check URLs carefully
Avoid downloading unknown files from text messages or private messages
If you are unsure, use your browser's private-browsing or safer-browsing options
Bonus tip: Configure your email app to display full email addresses instead of names only.
8. Set up phone tracking and remote erase

If your phone is stolen, tracking and remote erase can help protect your data.
iPhone (Find My iPhone):
Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My
Enable Find My iPhone and Send Last Location
Use iCloud.com to locate, lock, or erase your iPhone.
Android (Find My Device):
Go to Settings > Security > Find My Device and enable it
Visit android.com/find to track, ring, or remotely erase your phone
