Just Got an iPhone 17? Here's Everything You Need to Know

You already know iPhones. You do not need a tutorial on how to make a call.

What you do need is a clear answer to the question every upgrader asks in the first week: what is actually different, and what do I need to do to get the most out of it?

Here is the honest breakdown.

What Actually Changed From the iPhone 15 or 16

If you are coming from an iPhone 16, the upgrade feels more significant than you might expect. If you are coming from an iPhone 15, it is a noticeable jump.

The most immediate change is the display. The base iPhone 17 now has a 120Hz ProMotion display, which was previously exclusive to Pro models. Scrolling, swiping, and animations feel noticeably smoother. If you have been on a 15 or 16-base model, you will feel the difference within the first hour.

The screen is also slightly larger at 6.3 inches, up from 6.1 on the 16, with thinner bezels making it feel more screen than phone. Peak brightness hits 3,000 nits, which means outdoor visibility is significantly better than what you were used to.

The camera has been updated across the board. The ultrawide is now 48MP, matching what was previously only available on Pro models. The front camera is now 18MP with Center Stage, meaning it automatically adjusts framing during video calls so you stay in the shot when you move. A new Dual Capture feature lets you record from the front and rear cameras at the same time.

Battery life is improved. The A19 chip is more power efficient than its predecessor, and Apple has added adaptive charging that learns your daily routine and adjusts accordingly.

Storage is also worth noting. The iPhone 17 base model now starts at 256GB at the same launch price the iPhone 16 started at. That is double the entry-level storage for the same money.

Settings to Change Right Away

These are the ones most people miss in the first week.

Battery charge limit Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and set the charge limit to 80%. This protects your battery's long-term health. The phone charges to 80% faster anyway and only tops up to 100% when it predicts you will need it.

Stolen Device Protection Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection and turn it on. If your phone is ever stolen and the thief knows your passcode, this setting blocks them from changing your Apple ID, disabling Find My, or accessing saved passwords without your Face ID. There is no passcode fallback. It is one of the most important settings on any iPhone and it takes ten seconds to enable.

Video resolution By default, your iPhone records in 1080p. Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and change it to 4K at 30fps. You have the best camera the base iPhone has ever had. Use it.

Call Screening New in iOS 26. Go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Ask Reason for Calling. Unknown numbers get screened before they reach you. The caller is asked who they are and why they are calling, and you see a live text transcript on your screen. You decide whether to pick up. It works like a personal answering service and it filters spam calls without you having to do anything.

Always-On Display For the first time, the base iPhone 17 supports Always-On Display. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display to set it up. It shows the time, widgets, and notifications while your screen is off. Once you use it, you will not want to turn it off.

Liquid Glass display mode iOS 26 introduced a new design called Liquid Glass, which makes the interface more transparent. If you prefer cleaner contrast and a less glassy look, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and switch the mode from Clear to Tinted.

Features Most People Do Not Know About

Spatial Scenes iOS 26 can convert compatible photos into a faux-3D lock screen. Go to Settings > Wallpaper, add a new wallpaper, and choose a photo with a clear foreground subject. Your phone will apply a depth effect you can see by tilting the device. It sounds like a gimmick. It actually looks impressive.

Camera settings are now inside the Camera app In previous iOS versions, you had to dig through the Settings app to change resolution or file format. In iOS 26, those controls live directly inside the Camera app. When the camera is open, tap the icons near the top to switch between 24MP and 48MP, toggle RAW, or change aspect ratio. Much faster than before.

Live Translation: If you have AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, open the Translate app, tap Live, choose your languages, and start a conversation. It translates speech in near real-time through your earphones. Genuinely useful if you travel or regularly communicate across languages.

Lens cleaning detection iOS 26 now detects when your camera lens is dirty and prompts you to clean it. Pay attention to this one. A dirty lens is one of the most common reasons phone photos look worse than they should. If you find the prompt annoying, you can disable it at Settings > Camera > Lens Cleaning.

Charge time on the lock screen. When you plug in your iPhone 17, the lock screen now shows an estimated time to reach 80%. For a full breakdown of the charge timeline, go to Settings > Battery. Useful if you are trying to figure out whether you have enough time to top up before heading out.

Urgent Reminders iOS 26 connected the Reminders app to the alarm system. Open Reminders, create or edit a reminder, add a date and time, and toggle on Urgent. It fires an alarm, not just a notification. For anything you genuinely cannot afford to miss, this is worth using.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Assume Something Is Wrong

iOS 26 looks different from what you are used to. The design has changed more than any iOS update in years. The interface is more transparent, icons look different, and some controls have moved. Give it a week before deciding you hate it. Most people adjust quickly and do not go back.

Your old iPhone 15 or 16 screen protector and case will not fit the 17. The dimensions changed. This catches people off guard, especially if they ordered accessories before the phone arrived.
